About Laura:

Laura Mathews is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist with over 20 years of clinical experience. She is licensed through the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine and has completed extensive postgraduate training in Classical Chinese Medicine, Japanese Meridian Therapy, and herbal medicine.

Before returning to Pennsylvania, Laura co-founded the Neighborhood Acupuncture Project in Austin, Texas, where she provided more than 50,000 treatments in a high-volume community clinic setting. Working with 60–80 patients per week for many years gave her the opportunity to treat a wide range of conditions and develop a clear, effective approach to care.

Laura specializes in helping people with both acute and chronic conditions, including pain, respiratory issues, digestive concerns, stress-related disorders, and complex patterns that don’t always respond fully to conventional treatment alone.

Her approach is both practical and thorough. She looks not only at symptoms, but at the underlying patterns in the body that contribute to imbalance. Patients often appreciate her ability to listen carefully, identify root causes, and create treatment plans that feel both grounded and personalized.

While her work is firmly rooted in clinical training and experience, Laura also recognizes that health is influenced by more than just the physical body. Stress, environment, and life experiences all play a role in how symptoms develop and resolve. Her goal is to support the whole person in a way that feels approachable, respectful, and effective.

Laura received her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine in 2006. She has studied with a number of respected teachers in the field, including Koei Kuwahara, Sharon Weizenbaum, Heiner Fruehauf, and others, and continues to pursue advanced training in classical herbal medicine.

In 2023, Laura returned to Northwest Pennsylvania to be closer to family and to reconnect with the landscape that first inspired her path in medicine. She now practices in Lucinda and also operates Dear Heart Medicinals & Mercantile in Leeper, where she is working toward creating a space that brings together healing, nature, and community.

  • Laura’s approach to Chinese Medicine has been shaped by both formal education and many years of continued study with respected teachers in the field.

Her training includes Classical Chinese Medicine, Japanese Meridian Therapy, Qi Gong, and herbal medicine traditions that emphasize treating the root of disease rather than only symptoms.

She has studied with and been influenced by practitioners and scholars including:

    • Sharon Weizenbaum (Classical Herbal Medicine, White Pine Institute)

    • Heiner Fruehauf (Classical Chinese Medicine, Classical Pearls)

    • Claude Larre & Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée (Classical Chinese philosophy and medicine)

    • Lonnie Jarrett (Constitutional acupuncture)

    • Mikio Sankey (Esoteric acupuncture)

    • Jeffrey Yuen (Classical Chinese Medicine lineage teachings)

    • Christina Pratt/Last Mask Teachings

    • Jampa Stewart, Junji Mizutani, David Euler, and others

In addition to her clinical and academic training, Laura has spent years engaged in personal cultivation practices, including daily Qi Gong and ongoing study in traditions that explore the relationship between body, mind, and environment.

She continues to refine her work through advanced study and hands-on clinical experience.
